From Straw Smoke to Sustainable Change

Climate change can feel like a global problem, but its impact often begins with very local actions.

Growing up in Cần Thơ, I have always felt a strong connection to the Mekong Delta — a region where agriculture, communities, and the environment are deeply intertwined. Today, the Delta is facing increasing challenges from rising sea levels, drought, saltwater intrusion, and flooding, putting pressure on local livelihoods and ecosystems.

These challenges became the starting point for the Mekong Xanh Competition, a platform created to raise awareness, strengthen community resilience, and encourage practical solutions for climate adaptation in the Mekong Delta. The competition brought together local knowledge, research, and innovative ideas with the goal of finding solutions that could create meaningful, long-term impact for the region.

Together with my friend Erian Nguyen, I participated in the competition with a simple but important question:

What if agricultural waste could become a resource instead of a problem?

From Waste to Resource

Our project, “Straw Smoke – The Silent Enemy of the Sky,” focused on one familiar agricultural practice: burning rice straw after harvest.

What may seem like a simple farming habit can contribute to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, farmers continue to face declining soil quality, increasing dependence on chemical fertilizers, and more difficult farming conditions caused by climate change.

Instead of treating rice straw as waste, we explored how it could be transformed into organic fertilizer through fermentation with Trichoderma fungi.

The concept is simple:

Rice Straw → Fermentation → Organic Fertilizer → Healthier Soil → Less Burning

The solution has the potential to improve soil quality and moisture retention, support beneficial microorganisms, reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, and — most importantly — provide farmers with an alternative to burning straw in the fields.

The Idea Is Bigger Than the Solution

For us, the project was not only about developing an agricultural technique.

The bigger question was:

How can a good idea actually reach the people who need it?

Knowledge can remain inside laboratories, universities, or research papers if there is no bridge connecting it to everyday communities. That is why we proposed collaboration between four key forces: Government, Farmers, Scientists, and Agricultural Businesses.

We also saw communication as part of the solution.

Through YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok, scientific knowledge can be transformed into accessible stories and shared with farmers, young people, and local communities. Young audiences can then become another bridge — bringing new knowledge back to their families and the next generation.

Why This Project Matters to Me

As a designer, I believe creativity should not only make things look better. It can make important ideas easier to understand, easier to remember, and easier to act on.

This project allowed me to connect my background, my relationship with the Mekong Delta, and my experience in communication and design with an issue that I genuinely care about.

It also changed the way I think about sustainability.

Sustainability does not always require creating something completely new. Sometimes, it starts by looking at something we consider waste and asking a different question:

“What if this could become part of the solution?”

A single field of rice straw may seem insignificant. But when the same problem happens across millions of hectares, changing that one small action can become part of a much larger movement toward a healthier and more resilient Mekong Delta.

From straw smoke to sustainable change — this project is our small contribution to a much bigger future.
